Knight's sword. This auction is for an original c. 1890 knights templar sword or society sword as they are called among collectors. It was made by the pettibone brothers manufacturing co, cincinnati, oh, which described itself as fraternity publishers and suppliers of society goods. From 1887 to 1896, the pettibone manufacturing co. Published literature and manufactured a wide range of goods for ues by fraternal lodges. In the years from 1865 to 1918, a massive social phenomenon spread across the united states as millions of men joined thousands of lodges affiliated with hundreds of secret fraternal societies. It aws termed the great fraternal movement. At the moment of its greatest popularity, 1890 to 1915, one in every five american men belonged to one or more fraternal societies. At the height of america's industrialization, the fraternal movement and american business formed a unique relationship. As the lodges required special products-publications, supplies, equipment, furnishings and regalia-a separate industry developed to meet the requirements of this niche market. The two great firms that came to dominate the regalia industry, m. C. Lliley & co. And pettibone brothers.
Throughout history swords have been an instrument of justice, truth, equality and firmness. Swords have been used at every great event and have become imbued wtih great symbolism. For this reason, freemasons use swords in all their ceremonies. The pommel no this sword depicts a knight's head.
The ivory grip depicts the cross and crown emblem of the order with the owner's initials engraved on one side and a triangle and christian cross on the other. Medieval etchings are heavily engraved on both sides of the blade with much of the goldwash remaining. hTe name of original owner is also engraved on the blade.
